All achievements in the industrial fields have been made after the partition of the country in 1947. As a result of partition refugees from across the border settled in this district. Fortunately skilled labour from Sialkot (Pakistan) who had the know how for the manufacture of sports and surgical goods settled in this district. Leather industry was already here. With the passage of time a number of other industry like hand-tools, pipe-fittings, rubber-goods, auto-parts, wooden-furniture etc., have been developed in the district.
Among blocks, Jalandhar West and Rurka Kalan blocks are industrially developed. Goraya is well known for the production of Ball bearings, auto-parts, lathe chucks and chaff cutting machines.
Sports Good Industry
Jalandhar has the nucleus of sports goods industry in Punjab and has about 90% of the total sports goods units of the State. The product manufactured relates to all traditional products like foot-ball,cricket bats, hockey and cricket balls, hockey sticks, tennis badminton and squash rackets, balls, soft leather goods, shuttle cocks etc. This industry being labour intensive despite inadequate capital and technology, has reached a stage where it is reckoned as a major cottage industry providing direct employment to about 10000 workers.
Hand Tools Industry
Jalandhar is known for the manufacturing of Hand Tools like Spanner set, screw driver, nose pliers etc. 50 units are engaged in the manufacturing of hand tools giving employment to 8000 people.
Auto Parts Industry
Jalandhar is known for the manufacturing of good quality of auto parts.There are 300 units engaged in the manufacturing of auto parts providing employment to 4500 people. Several units are supplying auto parts to the orginal manufacturers of automobiles. There is export of Rs. 213.53 lacs of auto parts from Jalandhar during the year 1991-92.
Rubber Goods Industry
Jalandhar is known for the manufacturing of rubber goods items like V-shape chappals,V-Belts,Scooter/Cycle tyres and rubber rolls. There are 625 units giving employment to 6500 persons. There is export of Rs.682.62 lacs
from Jalandhar.
Surgical Instruments
Surgical Instruments units are labour intensive units. There are 275 units in Jalandhar providing employment to 2500 persons.
Tanning Industry
Jalandhar is known for manufacture of shoes and a number of allied units. Bawa Skins is an important export house of Jalandhar. At present, there are a large number of tanning units providing employment to a major section of the scheduled caste and other weaker sections.

Note: The registration scheme does not have a statutory basis. It is not mandatory for a small scale unit to register itself. The unit would normally get registered to avail the benefits, incentives or support given either by State or Central Government.

Types of SSI Registration:
- Provisional Registration and
- Permanent Registration.
Provisional Registration:
In the pre-production stage, a provisional registration certificate is given. Gene--rally this certificate can be obtained from the DIC within 24 hours. The validity is for a period of 5 years or till the date of starting of production by the unit, whichever is earlier.
The provisional registration certificate enables the unit to obtain various benefits required in the pre-production stage:
- Obtaining term loans and working capital limits from banks / financial institutions under priority sector lending.
- Facilities for accommodation, land and other statutory approvals or permissions
- Obtaining necessary NOCs and clearances from regulatory bodies such as pollution control boards, labor regulation etc.
Permanent Registration:
Once the unit comes into production, a permanent registration certificate is given to the unit upon application. This certificate is given within 30 days of the application. The permanent registration certificate is issued in perpetuity subject to some conditions. This certificate enables a unit to get various incentives and concessions:
- Excise exemption.
- Income Tax benefits and Sales Tax benefits as per State Govt., Policies.
- Price and Purchase Preference.
- Availability of raw material depending on existing policies.
- Other incentives and concessions given by State Governments (e.g. capital investment subsidies, interest subsidy, sales tax exemption/deferment, etc.)
