Objectives of the Department

Employment Situation: The employment exchange at Jalandhar was established in 1946. The main function of the employment exchange are

  • To register applications
  • To provide employment assistance
  • To impart vocational guidance to the youth
  • To collect employment market information to assess employment trends

As a result of increase in the volume of work at Sub-Regional Employment Exchange, Jalandhar, two town employment exchanges, one at Nawanshahr and other at Nakodar were opened at 1975 and 1982, respectively. The consolidated work report is as under:

  • Total Live Register upto 31/03/2002 = 30641
  • Registration during the period 01/04/2001 to 31/03/2002 = 11741
  • Placement made during the period 01/04/2001 to 31/03/2002:
    • Govt = 89
    • Pvt = 496
    • Total= 585

Overseas Cell: The Department has opened an overseas employment cell since January 2002, in which people interested in working abroad can get themselves registered by paying a fees of Rs. 250/-. The department will collect their biodata and publish in their website. The employers accessing this website can see their biodata and contact the persons directly. 185 registrations have been made during 01/2002 to 04/2002

Un Employment Allowance: It is given to the candidates who has three years of continuous registration with family income not exceeding Rs. 1000/- per month. Candidates with educational qualification between Matriculation and Graduation are paid unemployment allowance of Rs. 150/- PM. Candidates with qualification above graduation are paid Rs. 200/- PM. 232 candidates are currently getting stipends from the department under these category.
